TuDiabetes Live Interview Erin Spineto, author of Islands and Insulin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0j6DTlvgik

Erin Spineto, a UC San Diego graduate and science teacher, works with non-profit Insulindependence in her quest to inspire fellow Type I diabetics to overcome limitations. Determined to challenge herself as a Type I diabetic, she chronicles her solo sailing adventures and the ups and downs of life as a diabetic. She and her husband, Tony, live in San Diego, California with their two children.

Islands and Insulin is the story of a girl, given a boat, one hundred nautical miles of ocean, and way too much caffeine to reflect on how an incorrigible disease has altered her voyage into adulthood, all wrapped inside a diabetes survival manual. It is a cross between the humor of Steve Markley’s Publish This Book, the travel journal of Jimmy Buffett’s A Pirate Looks at Fifty, and the sailing of Pete Goss’s Close to the Wind minus the sixty knot winds, fifty foot waves, below freezing temperatures, and the slick escape from death… hopefully.

TuDiabetes Live Interview with Mari Ruddy, Founder and Director of TeamWILD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dsNn08Ivmg

In honor of US National Physical Fitness and Sports Month we welcome Mari Ruddy to join us for a live-streamed conversation on the TuDiabetes homepage.
Mari Ruddy is Director of TeamWILD, has lived with type 1 diabetes for 30 years and is a two time breast cancer survivor. She founded TeamWILD in 2008 after searching high and low for resources for women with diabetes who wanted to exercise safely and with expert guidance.
Mari is also the founder of the Red Rider Recognition Program that celebrates cyclists at the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure. Mari founded TeamWILD (which originally stood for Women Inspiring Life with Diabetes) after realizing that most of the cyclists at the Tour were men with diabetes. She wanted to support women with diabetes getting out there and getting fit. WILD continues to do this, and now also supports men!
Mari’s own athletic journey began with cycling, and she’s done multiple long-distance rides, including at a number of Tour de Cures. She branched out into triathlons and was the team captain of the 2009 WILD team who raced the 70.3 half-Ironman in Austin, TX.
