Deborah is a Nursing Science and Healthcare Leadership PhD Candidate at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, Sacramento, California. She graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in nursing and from Boston College with a master’s degree in curriculum development and instruction. Deborah started her diabetes career at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Massachusetts working as a Certified Diabetes Educator. She is currently employed as the ADA/AADE Program Coordinator of Sutter Health Integrated Diabetes Education Network (SHIDEN), and Clinical Nurse Specialist at Sutter Medical Foundation in Sacramento, CA. Deborah has served on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and was recently elected President-elect of AADE and will begin her 3 year term in 2014 assuming the role of President in 2015.

Deborah’s research interests involve the use of Health Information Technology to increase access to and improve the quality of diabetes education. Her dissertation research evaluates the feasibility and impact of a telehealth remote monitoring intervention on A1C in persons with type 2 diabetes, utilizing paired SMBG testing. She is also very interested in the emerging concept of the e-Patient and how diabetes educators can collaborate with the Diabetes Online Community (DOC).

Deborah currently serves on the editorial board of Diabetes Spectrum magazine and has been a past guest editor of Diabetes Health Professional. She has served on the California Diabetes Educators Tobacco and Diabetes Taskforce, the Diabetes Coalition of California, the World Diabetes Day committee through the Sacramento American Diabetes Association. She is also a member of the American Telemedicine Association, the Health Information and Management Systems Society and the American Medical Informatics Association. She is a Jonas Scholar, Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence and recently received the Leadership, Education and Policy (LEAP) Fellowship from the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis.

Deborah is a certified diabetes educator and a clinical nurse specialist, Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management. She is also a Fellow of AADE.
